How to resist vanilla pod powder and its sweet, comforting scent? Always remember LUSH’s first rule: Don’t eat the soap!
Lush UK* purchases vanilla pod (also called bean) powder from the Ndali farm in Uganda, unless the harvests or market prices decide otherwise. Ndali is a curing facility that purchases green vanilla beans from the Rwenzori Farmers Cooperative Union. The cooperative enables farmers to maintain fair prices throughout the market’s fluctuations.
As the vanilla orchid grows on vines that climb trees and naturally needs shade to thrive, it works well within an agroforestry system. It can be cultivated alongside other high-value crops, such as plantain and cocoa trees, which helps diversify crops and incomes and improve biodiversity.
*With several manufacturing sites across the globe, this information may vary depending on where your Lush products were made.
Vanilla bean powder can have a faint scent, as it is sometimes made from the leftovers of natural vanilla extract production, meaning the pods have already given a lot of their flavour. At Lush, we love upcycled materials, but the vanilla powder we buy is not one. It is made by finely grinding the highest quality vanilla pods, newly made and untouched, resulting in a very fragrant powder that tantalises even with a small amount.
Well, fragrance, for sure - a mouthwatering, comforting, mellow scent - but the spice also has many skin benefits thanks to its soothing and antibacterial properties. Read all about the benefits of vanilla here.
