Where does Lush purchase organic almond oil?

Lush UK and Australia* source organic almond oil from Almendrehesa, a Spanish supplier located in Granada, from which we also purchase ground almonds. The company was founded in 2016 by twenty farmers, driven by a desire to improve their land and their lives. Eight years later, there were more than fifty. They are part of a network called AlVelAl that aims to restore degraded ecosystems and land using regenerative farming techniques, among other things.

All farmers that Almendrehesa works with sign a Commitment to Regenerative Agriculture, which includes the minimum standards below:

• The use of compost as fertiliser and almond tree prunings as mulch. 
• Soil vegetation cover with careful management to increase water retention. 
• Water management practices, including the implementation of swales or ponds. 
• Erosion prevention practices, including dikes and dams. 
• Diversification of almond tree varieties used.

Almendrehesa’s farmers are recognised for their production of rainfed, high-quality almonds. They mainly use food-grade almonds, sometimes broken ones, for their oil production. Any almonds that are not good enough for oil pressing are sold to manufacturers that make products such as almond paste or butter, avoiding waste.
