Lilies are much more than just pretty petals.
Herbs and flowers, in this case lilies, are gathered in a muslin cloth and steeped in hot water for several minutes - as you’d do for herbal tea. This helps capture their scent, properties, and, in some cases, colour.
True lilies belong to the same family (Liliaceae) as onions, leeks, garlic, and chives. Like all the plants of this family, they’re entirely edible and are one of the oldest cultivated plants. It’s been foraged or grown for centuries, especially in East Asia and North America. The taste is reportedly akin to a parsnip or a potato.
