Kombu seaweed (also known as kelp) is typically purchased in either shredded form or large, dry sheets that can be cut into various shapes. When soaked in warm water, the kombu becomes slippery and jelly-like.
Kombu seaweed is well known in Asia, where it’s used for nutritious soups. It can be a few meters long and form an underwater 'kelp forest' in the oceans. These are recognised as one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth.
Full of minerals and vitamins, seaweed is toning, soothing and cleansing the skin. It can help to boost skin and scalp hydration, and adds softness to the hair.
Lush* sources kombu seaweed from both Ireland and Japan.
Whole kombu sheets are cultivated in Hokkaido, Japan. They are grown by hanging kombu buds onto underwater ropes, and it takes approximately a year to reach a suitable size for harvesting. As seaweed buds are sourced naturally, they are GMO-free. The growers know the importance of maintaining the environment of both forest and ocean in order to keep their business sustainable. This is why they work on reforestation along the coastline by planting native species, and do regular beach and seaweed bed cleaning.
