Raphanus sativus

Benefits

Hydrating, Absorbing

Daikon radish has long been a popular food in East Asia due to its supposed detoxifying effects when ingested. Tasty cuisine aside, fresh daikon radish juice is an excellent source of nutrients and vitamins that can have a softening effect on the skin when used in cosmetics.

What are the benefits of fresh daikon radish juice?

  • The high water content means it can help to hydrate the skin.
  • Alpha-linoleic acids aid moisture retention and skin elasticity.
  • The porous structure of fresh daikon radish is thought to absorb unpleasant odours.

Where does fresh daikon radish juice originate?

The daikon radish is a perennial root vegetable belonging to the mustard plant family, Brassicaceae, a distant relative of other kitchen favourites such as cabbage, broccoli and turnip. The name daikon means “big root” in Japanese, which is very fitting for this large tuber.

Daikon is thought to be native to the Mediterranean and Black Sea coast. However, it is more widely associated with East Asia and South Asia, where daikon has been widely cultivated for centuries. It comes in several varieties and colours, but perhaps the most famous is the long white Japanese variety that somewhat resembles a large white carrot.
