Calcium Lactate is often used in food as a firming agent, and it’s similarly used in our products to stabilise and thicken them. 

In addition to enhancing the viscosity of a product, calcium lactate enables products to suspend particles evenly, such as glitter or exfoliants, preventing them from settling at the bottom. This helps products look their best and allows for consistency throughout, ensuring effective results with every use. 

It is also thought that calcium lactate can offer some mild skin benefits when used in cosmetics, although it is typically used for the functional properties mentioned above.

What is calcium lactate?

Calcium lactate is a calcium salt found in lactic acid, which is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). Whilst naturally found in cheese, Lush uses synthetically reproduced calcium lactate, making it vegan.
