Benefits

Sure, flour seems more related to cooking than cosmetics, but babassu flour makes the skin super soft, and that's why we love it at Lush.

What is babassu?

The babassu palm (or babaçu) is the predominant palm species in the Babaçu forests of Maranhão, Brazil. It grows hanging stems from its top, covered with hundreds of round, tightly packed fruits, looking like a giant pine cone or grapes. The flour is obtained from the flesh of these fruits.

Where does Lush purchase babassu flour?

Lush purchases babassu flour from a Brazilian supplier. They partner with traditional and indigenous communities who collect and process the fruits.

Our supplier ensures regular supply, good quality, fair prices, and good manufacturing practices throughout the production chain. The Origens Brasil network, led by the IMAFLORA Institute, validates their impact monitoring. They use an approved methodology considering twenty economic, environmental, and governance indicators to ensure a sustainable supply chain.

Harvesting and processing are done using methods that support forest conservation. Babassu flour often has a beige to light pink colour, which limits its use in makeup products. However, our supplier's flour is completely white due to a unique bleaching process that involves drying, reducing, and grading by size.

What are the benefits of babassu flour?

When applied to the skin, the flour gives a matte effect and leaves a soft, almost creamy feel. It also improves the product's ability to glide nicely during application.

Intrigued by babassu? We also purchase babassu oil!
