Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (thankfully abbreviated to BMBM) is a synthetic compound added to sunscreen products to filter UV light.
This ingredient, a white powder, is made in Asia.
Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane is most famously known as avobenzone. It is an ‘organic’ UV filter that protects the skin from sun damage by absorbing UVA rays into itself.
Patented in 1973, it has been widely used in cosmetics and sunscreens for decades. In the Lush suncare range, it is found in combination with octylmethoxycinnamate, a UVB-screening compound, and octocrylene in order to obtain the broadest and most effective protection possible.
